Yes, that's right; canoeing. Once reserved for summer camp kids and rugged outdoorsmen, canoeing is quickly becoming the newest "Get Away From It All" activity of the 21st century.
Perhaps it's the joy of skimming over the water. Or the feeling of freedom. Maybe it's the connection to nature. Or the social aspects-passing wonderful fair days in the company of friends and family. Whatever it is, something about canoeing seems to heal the rips and tears of modern life. Once you're on the water, your problems often melt away.
Canoeing slows us down and allows us to embrace what's real: the irrepressible natural world. And ourselves. For many paddlers I've heard from, canoeing exists as a form of meditation. The discipline involved in executing a good stroke over and over, hundreds of times an hour-such repetition can cleanse your mind of all the stresses and problems of everyday life as it recharges your batteries and helps you to see the world in a brand new way.
In fact, once you've seen the world through "paddler's eyes," you may never look at it in the same way again. I know I haven't.
When I began paddling years ago, I had just about had it up to here with the frenetic pace of my life. When a friend introduced me to canoeing, I was pretty skeptical at first. But, believe me; within minutes of being away from the asphalt jungle, I could feel my whole body relaxing. The barrage of phones and cars and questions and bills and all of it washed away within mere moments.
It was amazing, really. After just one short day of canoeing, I was hooked. I was convinced. I was converted. Whatever you want to call it, that's what I was. Canoeing was the answer!
